History of urbanism in the 20th century in 10 videos

The "video" tag in my Delicious keeps growing and has reached 275 references. I opened this tag to prepare an experiment of facilitating a discussion session in the course Repensar las políticas urbanas 30 años después. That exercise took place late in 2010 and one year later, I posted A selection of 75 videos about cities and urban policies highlighting some of the videos that were considered for the final short-list of videos we finally used in the session. I will try to find the time soon to update this list but, in the meantime, here you can find 10 pieces that draw a selective and incomplete (but still relevant I guess) picture of some of the main ideas that influenced how cities were thought, designed and built in the 20^th century. A mix of names, cities and rarities in some cases, and not an official chart of the most important ideas or topics of last century urbanism.

Lewis Mumford on the city

The City In History, a classic read by Lewis Mumford, as screenplay. In the beginning of the 1960´s and during that decade, the city was a subject for this important documentary project conducted by the National Film Board of Canada. This is only a chapter of the whole series but starring Lewis Mumford and his book shows how influential were his ideas and the growing concern about cities.

The City - 1939 Documentary - Clip 1: From Farms to Factories

I found this video in the post The Suburban Prelude: The City (1939), an article about the documentary called 'The City', created for the 1939 New York World Fair as part of the "City of Tomorrow" exhibition. This event is considered to be a remarkable stepping stone in the history of urbanism in the USA (and consequently, far beyond) as it promoted a vision of the future of cities in which escapism from conflictive, crowded and unhealthy city centers was an objective for a new suburban dream. This clip is a good tool to show and understand the cultural visions that promoted the anti-urban movement in those days and created the spread of the suburbanization of American way of life.

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth: an Urban History

This is the trailer of a recent documentary that explores the case of the Pruitt-Igoe housing project, sometimes pointed out as an example of failed urban project of the modernist movement. There are more documentaries on housing projects but this one deserves a mention as as it is a current filming project.

Anatomy of Los Angeles (1969)

Los Angeles has been one of the main examples of suburban expansion and of its social, economic and environmental consequences. In 1969, a French TV looked at LA as a reference to explore its role. We can even hear "It is a true urban laboratory", a perfect definition of the importance of this city in the collective imaginary of urban living. The video seems to be carried out with the purpose of having a reference of how other cities would look in the future: "If you would like to know what the outskirts of Paris, London or even Moscow will soon look like...", look at LA. We now know this experiment didn´t work perfectly.

The Living City (1970)

This is a great piece (not for its visual quality I am afraid) to understand with images and some perspective the traditional optimisms of urban masterplanning. It was the 70´s and London needed urgently of a huge urban renovation and public authorities prepared this documentary in order to explain the main interventions planned in the city, using daily scenes as the common picture describing the changes expected. As we can see, more than forty years ago, publicity was already being used as a tool to sell the benefits of urban interventions.

The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces

This one is very well known. Filmed as a research of public spaces in cities, this documentary explores the everyday use of cities by common people in their daily activities and why some places work while others don´t.

How to live in a city

I bumped into this great video some days ago, via Open Source Cities and it is a very nice piece produced in 1964 with educative purpose about the impact of urban living and the quality of good public spaces. Join the previous piece with the following and this one and you will have three great examples of works exploring the role of placemaking and open spaces in cities.

Jane Jacobs: Neighborhoods in Action

Jane Jacobs must be on any -even in a not comprehensive selection like this one- list of ideas that influenced urban thinking in the 20^th century. This interview with Jacobs shows the influence of built environment in social life and public health, the role of corners and intersections, how we move about in cities,...

Unfinished London - Episode 2

I wrote a post about this video some months ago. All the other ones are quite serious and thoughtful, while this one is very funny...but still thoughtful. I had a good time watching it for the first time, as it is an unexpected way to talk about urban planning history. It is not a historic piece; however, it deserves a mention, as it is a good film to explore London in the 1970´s. It shows how the Abercrombie Plan was still seeking to become completed with a series of ringways that would serve as a guarantee to solve urban congestion. Nevertheless, this is a general story of how these plans can become unsucessful due to financial constraints and community opposition. Watch the first episode too.

"New Moscow" (Новая Москва)

OK, this is weird. You probably you know about Stalin´s project to use Moscow as the symbol of the revolution (with the Palace of the soviets as the icon that would stand for Stalin´s ego and symbol of power for population and rival countries). This is why this video is very useful to understand how architecture has been used (throughout History, not just in the 20^th century) as a materialisation of power and, watched with some irony, this video may be considered one of the first filmed examples of the usage of urbanism -in this case, the post-war reconstruction efforts- to inflate social wisdom with outstanding sentences about urban identity and pride. Just remember this when you come across a promotional video about huge urban redevelopments. It will be using, more or less, the same ideas.

Besides this list, don´t forget to take a look at A History of Urban Documentary Filmmaking, a very good post on the origins of cam-in hand urban exploration and the evolution of this kind of action-research in cities.
I am sure there are lots of video pieces we could add. I think of those rarities showing the urban ideas by Walt Disney, old recording of Le Corbusier or any other main names in urbanism of architecture in the last century, documentaries about urban projects of any kind, retrofuturist takes, etc. Feel free to add your favourite ones.

Historia del urbanismo. 6 vídeos

Desde que hace un año hice el ejercicio de recopilar una serie de vídeos sobre políticas urbanas para una sesión audiovisual en el curso Repensar las políticas urbanas 30 años después no he dejado de ir guardando referencias. Bajo la categoría videos del Delicious cuento ahora mismo 220 referencias de material audiovisual centrado en las temáticas de este blog. Quizá en algún momento actualice la selección de los más interesantes pero, de mientras, quiero destacar aquellos que tengo identificados para la categoría adicional de historia. Son casi rarezas cuya visión en 2011 nos ofrece pinceladas sobre la concepción del urbanismo en el siglo XX.

Lewis Mumford on the city

The City In History, uno de los clásicos del urbanismo en el siglo XX, escrito por Lewis Mumford, en imágenes. Principios de los 60 y la ciudad como tema tiene entidad suficiente para que parezca interesante un proyecto así, en un momento en el que, como podemos ver, algunas ideas sobre la concepción espacial que hoy están superadas, entonces eran centrales.
The City - 1939 Documentary - Clip 1: From Farms to Factories

El video lo encontré en The Suburban Prelude: The City (1939), un post sobre el documental 'The City', creado para la Exposición de Nueva York de 1939, un evento que, en muchos aspectos, marcó durante décadas el modelo urbanístico y, sobre todo, la concepción territorio-movilidad en Estados Unidos y, consecuentemente, fuera de sus fronteras. El documental cuenta con la firma de Lewis Mumford y buscaba servir de inspiración para imaginar la ciudad del mañana. El capítulo que enlazo es uno de los iniciales y refleja en imágenes la visión apocalíptica de la ciudad industrial.
Anatomy of Los Angeles (1969)

Los Ángeles, el modelo perfecto para explicar el urban sprawl y sus consecuencias ambientales, sociales y económicas, visto desde la perspectiva de 1969. "It is a true urban laboratory" podemos escuchar. Hoy sabemos que el experimento tiene muchos puntos oscuros.
The Living City (1970)

Un buen material -no por su calidad audiovisual, por cierto, cosas de la época- para explicar en imágenes y con perspectiva el optimismo tradicional del gran planificador. Londres, década de los 70, necesita urgentemente una renovación urbana y la autoridad municipal prepara este vídeo para explicar sus principales intervenciones dentro de la ciudad, mezclándolas además con detalles sobre la vida cotidiana en la ciudad.
Unfinished London - Episode 2

De este video ya he hablado en otra ocasión. De hecho, su factura no es antigua, ya que apenas tiene unos pocos años. Sin embargo, recoge imágenes del Londres de los 70 y los planes de Abercrombie que con el paso de las décadas fueron buscando completar una serie de anillos de infraestructuras de movilidad viaria. Es precisamente esto lo que sirve de hilo argumental para el documental, ya que se centra en cómo estos planes se frustraron por la falta de dinero y la oposición vecinal, que impidió el desarrollo de unas infraestructuras que habrían hecho de Londres una ciudad cuya fisonomía sería muy diferente a la que conocemos hoy. Puedes ver también el episodio inicial.
"New Moscow" (Новая Москва)

Una de las rarezas más interesantes. El ya conocido plan de Stalin de renovación de Moscú a través de un faraónico proyecto. El vídeo nos da la perspectiva de algunas cosas que bien conocemos hoy. Entre otras cosas, visto el vídeo con cierta ironía, puede servir de ejemplo de cómo se ha utilizado el urbanismo -en este caso, un proceso de reconstrucción traumática- para fortalecer el espíritu del pueblo con grandes frases sobre el orgullo de una nueva identidad urbana, algo que abunda precisamente en los vídeos promocionales de las grandes operaciones urbanísticas de nuestro tiempo.
Junto a estos videos, también conviene repasar A History of Urban Documentary Filmmaking, una buena entrada sobre los orígenes de la exploración urbana cámara en mano y la evolución de este tipo de trabajos.
Seguro que por ahí hay muchísimas piezas más. Pienso en rarezas sobre el espíritu urbanista de Walt Disney, grabaciones de Le Corbusier y otros nombres clave, grabaciones de proyectos constructivos de hace décadas, filmaciones retrofuturistas, etc. Será cuestión de ampliar el catálogo.

A selection of 75 videos about cities and urban policies

I wrote a few days ago about the seminar Rethinking urban policy 30 years later and what I am preparing for my presentation. One of these things has to do with the organization of a discussion session using audiovisual materials as an excuse to review the central issues in current urban policies.

We have now completed the selection of videos that will be finally used in the session. It has been necessary to review a large number of very different types of works, choosing the final ones that best fit the structure of the seminar. This settling process has left a huge list of videos I want to share here because, although we will use in the course around 20 videos, many others are of great interest, too.
They vary in focus and perspective, but together (and disordered) compose a good database of videos that are circulating out there and deal with many of the issues urban policies face nowadays.

75 vídeos sobre ciudades y gestión urbana

Ya escribí hace unos días sobre el curso Repensar las políticas urbanas 30 años después y sobre lo que ando preparando para mi intevención. Una de estas cosas tiene que ver con la organización de una sesión de debate utilizando diferentes materiales audiovisuales como excusa para revisar los discursos urbanos y los temas más centrales en las políticas urbanas actuales.

Hemos terminado ya con la selección de los videos que finalmente utilizaremos en la sesión, pero para llegar a ella ha habido que repasar una gran cantidad de trabajos de muy diferente tipo, eligiendo al final los que mejor encajan con la estructura de contenidos del propio curso. De este proceso de decantación ha salido una buena lista de vídeos que comparto aquí ya que, aunque utilizaremos en el curso alrededor de 20 vídeos, muchos otros se han quedado por el camino y quedan apuntados en la lista más abajo y muchos otros que no están en esta lista.
Como decía, son de muy diferente signo, pero todos juntos (y desordenados) son una buena base de datos de vídeos que andan circulando por ahí y que tratan de forma más o menos directa muchas de las realidades urbanas a día de hoy. Por supuesto, la lista podría ampliarse -y para eso están los comentarios al post si queréis- y seguro que faltan otras perspectivas que no hemos tenido en cuenta para el curso.
Son, si no me equivoco, 75 vídeos, agrupados aquí en temas un poco genéricos e imprecisos.

En fin, es solo una selección. No me olvido tampoco de otros trabajos de carácter documental con una dimensión diferente. Guillermo Cruz presentará su nuevo documental con Santiago Cirugeda el próximo 17 de diciembre en Barcelona, esta vez en formato video blog, ENLARED. Tampoco del muy recomendable documental Lugar y sociedad, del que ya hablamos hace un tiempo. O del trabajo que hacen en Street Films para documentar experiencias. O el último proyecto documental de Gary Hustwit, Urbanized, actualmente en preparación. Y muchos otros que están guardados en Delicious.
